A Spectacular Bollywood Wedding

Hi everyone

I've been lucky enough to have visited India on a handful of occasions when I was in the interior fashion industry. What I love most about this amazing country is the sensory explosion that leaves me open-mouthed and inspired. Indian culture and specifically its fashion, for me is typified by its bold, vibrant, uncompromising and unashamed use of colour. I'm a self-confessed colour obsessive, especially where it meets fine fabrics.

It was only last night that I mentioned to Him Indoors that in the next life I wish to come back as an Asian woman so that I could have the privilege of being able to spend every day in a blaze of glorious colour and beauty.

Indian weddings are are known for their spectacular celebrations. As today has been full of sunshine, light and colour, I wanted to end with my Friday Video Session with this unbelievable show stopping Bollywood wedding video by Mili Gosh

5 Spectacular Birdcage Veils with Fascinators

Hello

I have decided that at 43 I'm on the wrong side of right to be wearing a cathedral length veil at my wedding. Instead I've been looking at alternatives that flatter my facial folds (OK, I exaggerate, I don't look a sharpe dog just yet!) and vintage theme.

For a nearly-time-to-finish Friday treat, here are 5 stunning birdcage veils I simply LOVE!!

How To Drop A Dress Size Without Dieting

Hello!

What if I told you that I could show you how to drop at least one dress size in less than 5 minutes without depriving yourself of your chocolates and wine and without having to sweat it out in a gym? Would you believe me?

Well, the truth is that as a style advisor I've done exactly that for literally hundreds of women. And this little secret kept by many a celebrity lies in the magic of underwear. Wearing the RIGHT underwear (and believe me without the right advice, this can go pretty pear shaped - excuse the pun!) in the RIGHT way can see you heading for a dress size smaller right away! Have I got your attention?! Read on.

Pictures do speak louder than words sometimes and here are some examples of what happens when good contour underwear meets our natural body shape....

Smoothing out those lumps, bumps and wobbly bits we ALL have somewhere!

Most women are wearing the wrong bra size - see how you gain inches on your waist!
Before you go trying wedding dresses on GET A BRA FITTING!!! This makes a huge difference to how your dress will fit you. My recommendations for excellent service is JOHN LEWIS & BRAVISSIMO - smaller independents are also a good bet.

Got tummy, hips and thighs you'd like to slice inches off without going under the knife? Well, these ladies need to become your best friends and yes, I know they're not exactly passion lighters but you can always slip into those later ;)
Trinny & Susannah Underwear

Again, if you're not intending to lose weight before your wedding then wear my Big Brendas (as I've affectionately come to know them) when you go for your fitting.
Drop me a line if you want to know the best places to get these - here are a selection of many of the stockists - I've created a link straight to the tuck-me-in underwear for you :)

And just before I head off to eat my pain au chocolat, don't be fooled into thinking that the celebrity world are naturally (and un-naturally thin) blessed with perfect figures - they've just been given access to this little secret I'm passing on to you now....

Hey everyone

I've been prompted to throw in an impulsive post inspired by my very own bad dancing to some fab cheesy 80's music in the office this sunny afternoon. I'm still undecided whether I'll actually have a first dance or not - I'm inclined to say not as I don't want to draw attention to our poor dancing techniques - if any attention at all to be honest :)

Although I have always LOVED the idea of doing this....

Trash Your Wedding Dress!

Morning everyone!

I remember after wedding number 1 thinking how tragic it was that this beautiful wedding dress I'd spent muchos spondoolies on lay crumpled in the corner of my hotel room. There was that little bit of me that wanted to pick it up, put it back on and go down to breakfast in it. For ye brides to be - be warned you may well feel the same sense of loss!

I've met an incredibly talented photographer with an incredible concept which I think is just awesome and which I am most certainly going to use this time around! Darren Athersmith has bought to the UK a concept called 'Trash The Dress' from the USA. The concept is less about having a psychotic moment and taking a pair of scissors to our prized possession before throwing ourselves into a festival style mud slide and more about allowing you the time and space to create stunning portraits that just aren't possible on the wedding day.

Laura's request from Darren was a simple one "to wade into a river in her dress!" A simple enough request with impossibly beautiful results

Darren tells me "Our concept is simple, meet us at a location of your choice after having your hair and makeup done (we can include this if necessary), put on your wedding dress and we then take our time creating beautiful images with a difference. Our suggestion is simply to get your hair and makeup done and then put your dress on again to get some stunning bridal portraits out on location, no harm to your dress necessary!

I was blown away by the photographs of Mitra, below which made me think of the drama of the recent Jane Eyre film! Mitra is passionate about her horse Chip and so Darren arranged to meet her at the beach to capture images of her riding Chip in her wedding dress.

These images are created for you and can include things that are personal to you. Being a wedding photographer based in the Lake District there are many beautiful locations that can be used for the shoot, from lakes to mountains, rivers and waterfalls.

For Steph's wedding photographs , above she asked be photographed at the jetty at Coniston Water. "The plan was to have a beautiful sunset in the background but again the weather seemed to be against us so we changed our approach and went for a moody look, the images were stunning."

So brides-to-be, before you consign your dress to the back of the spare bedroom door (or plan to!) make sure you factor Darren into your wedding planning schedule. And let me the first to see your photos afterwards!!

Have a great sunshine filled day :)

How To Make Your Own Vintage Chalkboards

Hi everyone

I've decided on having a sweet table at our wedding and wanted also to dot some signs and chalk boards around just for those special little touches. I've been really inspired by ideas like these

Vintage Amethyst

Oh-So-Lovely.Com

So I decided I'd make my own as buying in something new isn't an option. So I did what I di best and headed down to make regular car boot sale one wet and windy Sunday morning at ridiculous o'clock. I'm never quite sure what I'm looking for but I ALWAYS seem to come back with something fabulous, curious and wonderful. So it was that I found this fabulous art deco style mirror on a stand and after some furious haggling got it for a massive £2!

Admittedly I had zero connection with the not so pretty painting behind the glass and so wasn't overly concerned about undoing the back and removing it. Plus it was just too much hassle. So, I hot footed it down to B&Q to get my essentials

1. Paint brush

2. Chalk Board Paint

3. Piece of 3mm MDF

4. Super Bond Glue - the stuff that would stick your body up to the ceiling if you needed it to!

I gave the wood a little polish with the help of my old friend Mr Pledge. I didn't sand it down as I wanted it to keep its imperfect rustic feel. I gave the mdf a couple of coats of the black board paint - its really important that you have a good brush and that you leave the first coat to dry properly before you apply the second coat. Once it was dry I simply covered the back with plenty of the rocket fuel glue to make sure it staid in place and hey presto....

Beeeaaaaautiful and made even more special in that the whole project cost me no more than £5!!!

As I've got the paint, the brushes and the bug now :) I've decided to try the same technique out on plates, trays, chairs and well....who knows. Watch out for my next updates!

Original Vintage Lace & Organza Wedding Gown

Afternoon all!

As you know, it s vintage theme that's floating my wedding boat - that's generally speaking but also for my wedding! In the pursuit of making this happen I've been trying to find THE perfect original vintage wedding dress (can't do fake this time!) but at 5'11" its proving harder than I thought. It seems that we have grown taller over the generations and I am, as you can see, no exception!

Nevertheless, I went ahead and bought a stunning original wedding dress ignoring the fact that it was worn sometime in the 60's or 70's by someone who was 5'4" and a size 8. Hmmmmm. Mucho stupido.

So my wedding friends, take a look at this stunning vintage wedding gown with its intricate detail and oh so beautiful finishes. Damn those long legs of mine.... Bought for £500, but selling it for £300 on Preloved.

Oh La La - Gorgeous French Wedding

Bonjour ma petites pois!

I hope you're all well and getting ready for your weekend. It's Friday and that means its time for a beautiful wedding video that gives us that wonderful feeling that only watching beautiful art on film can bring. And this wedding is certainly no exception.

Its been shot on a simple 8mm and watching it makes me feel I'm watching a 1930's movie. The whole sentiment is just so beautiful, unaffected and sincere. It's grainy, jiggles about and some would scoff at the non "professional' perspective BUT thats EXACTLY why I love it so much.

Enjoy the arrhhhhhhhhhhhh moments that come with watching this lovely Friday morning wedding video!

A Very Vintage Pout

Hello!

This is going to be a relatively short but very sweet post from me this afternoon. Thanks to the powerhouse that is Twitter, I have been introduced to the fabulous Michelle and her gem of a business Vintage Pout. I am absolutely in love with her range of organic lip balms encased in individually designed heart-shaped silver cases.

With a range of jeweled finishes to the lid, they are simply gorgeous and for once you CAN just a book by its cover. The organic peppermint cream lip balm smells divine and leaves your lips looking and feeling like all you can do is smile! They come packed in a lovely black organza bag for a special touch. I've got my little treasure ready for the big day and have ordered one for my sister-in law for her birthday.

If you want to make someone smile, then skip over to Michelle's site and grab one for yourself!

Marie Antoinette Inspired Wedding

Good morning everyone!

I found this fabulous French, period drama wedding video by IMPACT Video Productions. I'm not sure what I love more - the wedding itself or the sound track! Either way I'm whimsically wondering why on earth I'm not living in France, combing out my long thick hair about to marry a man who is more than happy to wear a spotty bow tie without fear of being signed up to the circus. Ahhhh in the next life!

For now, please enjoy this fabulous video which reminds me of the stunning costume drama of Dangerous Liaisons and Glen Close with her perfectly manicured hair and lips!

Dimity Eco Bride Runway Collection

Well Hello!

As far as fashion is concerned I'm a huge fan of sustainability, of finding ways to design and create beautiful items without terrorising the planet we live on and off and to re-cycle where possible. It's environmentally sound but also hugely creative and inspiring.

With this in mind, I was keen to showcase the fabulous work and world of Dimity and their Ecobride Ethos.  In their words

"It is becoming more important to people to know and celebrate the origin of the items they save for. A bridal gown, possibly the most important dress a girl will ever wear, is the culmination of her personality and what is important to her. EcoBride gowns take all of this into consideration, allowing a bride to display her care for the environment (through careful fabric choices) and the people who live in it (through development of rural skills of crochet & lace making)."

If you love the idea of wearing a stunning wedding gown that is made out of organic fabrics, antique textiles, and heirloom laces then you must visit their beautiful website - its a magical place I know you'll love.

Fascinators, Feathers & Faabulous Hats

Gorgeous Green Eco Wedding : Emily & Paul

Hi everyone

I couldnt wait to share this utterly beautiful wedding with you - my perfect COB wedding in every single way. It's been such a priviledge to have been allowed to share this with you care of the wonderful Emily & Paul of Clervaux Weddings and Gorgeous Green Living.

If you're mindful of being kind to the environment, as we all should be, and want to step away from the tinsel and tiaras of a traditional wedding then put down your pens and pads. This eco wedding is so lovely and true to the sentiments and values of this fab couple and one that rings true to me too. Over to you Emily....

From The Wellis With Love!

I'd always dreamed of getting married in the Yorkshire countryside but didn't think it was possible. Then someone suggested we look into humanist wedding ceremonies which would allow us greater freedom which we did and then opted for. It meant we could get married on the farm, which doesn't currently have a wedding liscence and we could do it outside and in our own way. I've never wanted a "big white wedding" and didn't really uderstand why everyone seemed to follow a template to celebrate their committment and relationship when all couples are different... we wanted something that would reflect us and that's exactly what we had! We did the legal bit in short ceremony at Harrogate registry office a couple of days before - we didn't exchange rings or wear wedding outfits.

The flowers used to decorate the venue were grown on the farm or my mum's allotment. I had a bouquet for me and my two bridesmaids and button holes for Paul (the groom) and his two best men - they were all English grown, non hot house, seasonal flowers and created by The Greenhouse Florist in Ripon, North Yorkshire. We didn't have a huge wedding party, we wanted it really simple.

I made all the decorations myself including bunting and jam jar lanterns and vases. I also had a crafty hen do - where my hens all contributed to a patchwork wall hanging with our names on and the date of our wedding, it also contains little bits of my wedding dress, my mum's and my auntie's weddings dresses - one to cherish forever!

I got my vintage, 1950s dress from eBay and a friend of mine made a few adjustments to make it 'me' - all in all it cost me less than £250 and I still to this day have not seen a dress I would rather have worn. I didn't actually step foot in a bridal shop at all!

Just 30 people attended our humanist ceremony in a wooden shelter in woodland next to a stream, they perched on log seats. Amazingly the weather stayed dry, although there were some threatening clouds and just as we said our promises the sun came out and shone into the shelter - it was perfect! We did exchange rings at our ceremony and we wrote our own promises.

We were then joined by a further 60 guests from 7pm and enjoyed a BBQ which included sausages and burgers that Paul and I had made with the chef a couple of days previously. We didn't have a sit down meal, favours or speeches. In the bar area, housed in a small marquess, the seats and tables were hay bales lent to us by a friend and in the dining room we stuck with the rustic wooden chair and tables... not a white table cloth or top table in sight!

We did have a prof. photographer as he's Paul's uncle but we also set up a gazebo with props and frames and polaroid cameras - some of the best photos came from there!

I think my greatest triumph was feeling like we did, in the main, do it our way, although we did have to make some compromises to please family members. I think my advice for other COBs would be to decide what really matters to you and on those issues, stick to your guns, but be flexible elsewhere - for the traditionalists amongst us weddings that are a bit different can be hard to get their heads round!

How much fun does this wedding look! While I'm off to dig out my wellies from the cellar, check out Emily's eco wedding website. If only I hadn't already booked my venue - humpf! BUT, what Emily's story has taught me is that even with the bricks and mortar building playing host to our wedding, we're right still not having the top table, a man with a loud voice shouting for us to skip into the room and a round of speeches that risk bringing me out in a nervous rash!
